PART 1

Kidder and Icky are sitting at the kitchen table. Kidder is trying to teach Icky to read with flash cards, but Icky is struggling. He quickly gets frustrated and lashes out.

Icky: For Christ sake I’ve told you it’s no good! It’s pointless anyway, It’s useless!
Kidder: Is it?
Icky: It is you know Kidder. Look at me older brother – worked really hard at school. Three years he’s been left – he’s never had a job yet.
Kidder: Hasn’t he?
Icky: No. You know what he’s got? He’s got CSE woodwork.

Billy walks into the room behind Kidder. He silently mouths to Icky the next letter. Kidder is thrilled when Icky seems to be doing so well, until they come to the letter ‘c’. Billy tries to mime doing up a coat but Icky guesses ‘j for jacket’. When Kidder realises what has been going on he chases Billy out of the room.

Back inside we see Icky making up words with the flash cards. He forms the word ‘twat’ and chuckles to himself.

Kidder and Billy head off to the markets. Left behind at the house Icky quickly gets bored and explores the house. He takes some money from Kidder’s drawer.

Walking to the markets, Billy talks about his mother.

Kidder: Don’t you miss your Mam?
Billy: No. I hate her.
Kidder: Come on, you can’t hate yer Mam.
Billy: I don’t hate her. I just… I don’t know. She’s useless.
Kidder: What do you mean?
Billy: She never looked after me. I had to look after her.
Kidder: Was she sick?
Billy: I suppose she was, yeah. But it wasn’t something you could go to the doctors about. She was never happy. And she’d never do anything. I’d try to do things to make her happy. But it never worked. I was going to kill her once. She was always saying how she’d only be happy when she got to heaven. I kept thinking about it one day. Thought about killing her. Sending her to heaven. But there might not be a heaven might there?
Kidder: Is that what stopped you?
Billy: No. I was frightened.
Kidder: What of?
Billy: Doin’ it (indistinct)
Kidder: What? …………. What did you say? …………….. What did you say??
Billy: Nothin!
Kidder: Oh! al’right.

Icky hitches a ride with a local. He asks to go to Rhyl, but is dropped off in the middle of the countryside. Eventually Icky finds some shops but they are closed and he sits on a step with his head in his hands in defeat.

When Billy and Kidder arrive at the market Billy goes exploring, and wanders through the sheep market. Two of the local hoons play havoc with the farmers who are trying to herd cattle into a pen. Billy spots them and chases one of the lads down a laneway. He reaches for the knife to threaten him and realises he doesn’t have it anymore. Instead he leans over him and points a finger in his face.

Billy: Now look – I want you to tell your mate that I accept his position. That he’s king. It’s his patch. It’s his soil. Whatever you want to call it. But I live here as well. Tell him to get used to that. You tell him what I could ’ave done to ya!

Icky comes across the Liverpool school group including Rabbit and the gang in a field, preparing to set up camp. He tells the lads about Kidder and the house. They are incredulous and he says he will take them to see it.

PART 2

Icky takes the lads back to Kidder's house. They make fun of Icky when he demonstrates his reading from a children's picture book. They are generally unimpressed with the house - particularly when they realise there's no TV, but then one of the boys finds Kidder's home made wine.

Kidder leaves Billy to look after the market stall, and he gets into the swing of it, marking up the price of the paintings to an interested buyer.

Meanwhile the lads get stuck into the wine, and then start an egg fight, generally making a mess of the house. When the other lads go out into the yard Rabbit steals Billy's knife from a drawer, and then starts to search through the rest of the house.

Jo and her friends arrive and browse around the market stall. Jo tries to engage Billy in conversation, but he's not very responsive.

Later she returns looking for her scarf, and Billy points out that it's in her pocket. It breaks the ice and Billy asks her if he'll see her the following week.

When Billy returns to the house he panics when he finds the front yard a mess. He races inside and finds Icky on the couch sleeping off the wine. He is furious and yells at the hungover Icky. He runs upstairs and discovers that Kidder's money has been stolen.

The boys go to the camp to get the money back. They ambush Rabbit as he returns to his tent while the rest of the school group sing songs around the campfire. Billy grabs Rabbit's arm and twists it behind his back as Icky shines a torch in his face.

Billy: Look, if you make a noise I'm going to break your fucking neck. Now where is it?
Rabbit: I haven't got it. I spent it.
Icky: Liar. It'd take you about 20 years to spend that much around here.
Billy: Where is it Rabbit?
Icky: Now you listen Rabbit. There's a bleeding big mountain back there. Now if you don't produce the cash, we're going to take you up that mountain. It'll take about an hour to get you up there. But coming down it'll take about 3 seconds. Got it?

Rabbit tries to cut Billy with the knife, but Billy manages to get it off him. Billy warns Rabbit not to tell anyone they're there and they leave with the money, leaving the knife behind.

Kidder returns to the house and searches for the boys. When they get back Billy assumes that Kidder is angry about the money being stolen, and is confused when he realises that he was only concerned about them being missing.

After Icky cleans up the mess Kidder tells him he still needs to do his reading. He hands him a package that has a new book - as Icky starts to read he realises it's about him and Billy called "One Summer".

Kidder also gives Billy a copy of the book he has made.

PART 3

Billy Icky and Kidder get ready to go to the local dance.

Icky: Weh! Let me at them. Ay. Ya' got any after shave?
Kidder: (laughs) No
Icky: Why not?
*Kidder pats his thick beard*
Icky: Look at ya - Did 'ya have all that hair on ya when you were a teacher?
Kidder: Yeah
Icky: Kworh - good job you didn't have a job at our school! The nit nurse would have got ya. Come Ed - all the talent will be gone by the time we get there!
Billy: Aay. Do I look alright, or do I look alright?
Kidder: <Do I look alright, or do I look alright> (in high pitched parody) You look lovely. Come on.

The three dance madly down the road - Billy and Icky singing guitar solos - while Kidder does a drum break, making fools of themselves. They enter the front doors of the dance, and as the opening chords of the band start we see they immediately pile back out protesting with Kidder chasing after them.

The lads sit sullenly watching the square dancing. This isn't their idea of a dance. Eventually they are both convinced unwillingly to join in.

Kidder talks to George and admits that the boys aren't his nephews. George warns him to be careful.

With the next dance an embarrassed Billy asks Jo to dance and when Icky is roped into dancing with Irene he's not impressed.

Icky: It's not dancing this you know. It's all-in-wrestling with music!

Later Billy and Jo go outside and kiss. The local policeman arrives and asks Billy some probing questions, and seems suspicious of his relationship with Kidder.

The night ends with everyone dancing 'The Paul Jones" - Icky with a rather formidable but very enthusiastic middle aged woman.
